Is Crowdsourcing Transportation "Uber" Safe?

There is a growing debate in Calgary regarding the entry of crowdsourced companies like Uber and Lyft entering the market to serve the population's transportation needs.  There is no easy answer as to which is better and if it should be permitted.  

Every year, my son takes his wife to New York City for her birthday.  This year, they decided to watch the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight in New Jersey with their cousins.  A cab ride from Times Square to Jersey cost them $70 plus a $20 empty cab fee plus gratuity.  On their return, they "e-hailed an Uber" and paid $45.  Sounds like a no-brainer right?

1.  Uber was cheaper.
2.  It was a nicer car.
3.  No cash was exchanged.
4.  The APP tracked their journey.  

From their perspective, there was no reason why Uber wasn't the obvious choice.  

My son works in the digital space, he is a strong proponent of crowdsourcing and was gushing over the beauty of the Uber experience.  Interestingly, in the same breath he also INSISTED that he would NEVER feel comfortable putting his wife and kids in an crowdsourced service like Uber on their own.

Apparently his argument has merit. Whosdrivingyou.org, a site that documents incidences involving ride-sharing/crowdsourced transportation services, reported the following incidents:

1.  An Uber driver punched a passenger in Oklahoma
2.  A Los Angeles woman was thrown out on the street by an Uber driver
3.  An Uber driver pulls a gun on a valet in Atlanta

The reality of it is, ride-sharing vendors are not professional drivers.  There is still debate over if they have the appropriate insurance and they have very little accountability in the event of an incident.  It's not like their livelihood is affected if they are banned from ride-sharing.
