At National Limo in Calgary, we take our client relationships very seriously. Our clients aren’t just another “fare”, they’re someone that we hope and strive to see again and again.  In the spirit of relationships, I wanted to share a story with you that illustrates just how strongly we focus on our clients and our relationships with them.

Meet John Hillstead, an 18-year-old man about to graduate from high school.  Our first encounter with John was the night of his grad.  He and some friends pulled enough funds together to rent a limousine for the night’s festivities. John had a lot of friends, so he sat in the front seat by me, and we got to talking.  It was obvious John was nervous, being on the cusp of boyhood and adulthood, thinking about the days before him.  By the end of the night, we were on a first name basis and John kept my business card in his wallet.

A few years later, John called needing a ride home from the airport.  It was nice to catch up with him and hear all about his job interviews and where life was taking him.  From there, John and I chatted on his regular trips to and from the airport.  John landed a great job that required 35% travel and I was grateful because I enjoyed his company.

Not much longer, I received a call from John saying he needed travel arrangements to his wedding! I was so happy for him and honoured that he wanted me to drive him to his wedding.  When I picked he and his groomsmen up, it was like déjà vu from the night of his grad; he was nervously standing on that precipice again. We had a nice chat on our way to the biggest day of his life and he seemed to calm because of it. The night ended with me dropping him and his bride off at their downtown hotel while I sent them best wishes on the days to come.

Years came and went but my friend John and I kept in touch with all his car service needs. It wasn’t until several years later that I received the worst call from my friend John.  He needed to make travel arrangements to his dad’s funeral. Having experienced that same situation myself, I knew what John was going through. When I picked John up for the service, there he was again, dressed in a suit and nervous, obviously for a totally different reason this time.  Like the two old friends we had become, we swapped stories about how we lost our parents.  I pulled up to the funeral site and when I opened the door for John, he just hugged me and said, “thank you for always being there.”

As I drove away, I thought back on all the trips my friend John and I took together; I felt very lucky to be part of his life and present for the most memorable events, but most of all, I felt lucky to call him a friend.
